Review of Boat Trader:
I have bought and sold multiple boats in my life using boat trader. The boat trader application is an excellent tool to filter and find distinctive style boats in a certain area. These boats can be offered by a dealership or a private seller. The biggest benefit of using boat trader is selecting a specific state or mileage away from a specific location that one is looking to purchase or sell from. There are many excellent features when it comes to this application but there are a couple of recommendations, I could give that I personally think would make it easier and more user friendly.
Usability:
The usability of the boat trader application is excellent overall. The initial home page of the site allows the user to select a drop down to either find, sell, or select services and research boats. If the user selects to "find" boats for sale, then it is directed to the next page where there are numerous filters that can be selected to narrow down the search. These filters include location, condition, length, year price, and more. This is the best feature of the application in my opinion as it allows the user to narrow their search to a specific area and what type of vessel they are looking for. One frustrating issue with the application is the numerous ads that have popped up making it difficult to sort through the options. Another issue is some of the boats that are featured say "request a price" which displays numerous boats that the user needs to be able to eliminate. Overall, the usability is wonderful, and the features are self-explanatory for the user.
Design:
The sleek design of the application makes it easy to use and keeps the user interested. Along with most other applications in the world, the ads take up useful space and become annoying when trying to filter out the search. I appreciate how the design on the home screen shows a couple of different style boats and only gives the user the first 4 options of choices to select. Once the user selects their option to buy or sell, the design of the next page places the filters all in one column and makes it quite easy to change certain filters while browsing. There are decent sized blocks that contain the image, price, and location of a vessel for the user to scroll and select through. Once selected, the user is directed to a new tab where the design features all the photos and information of the selected boat. This is a good feature because if the user does not like the selected boat, they can exit the tab and continue from where they left off. Unfortunately, about 1 out of every 5 blocks is an advertisement that makes it very cluttered.
Functionality:
The functionality is the best feature of the application. If a user becomes familiar with the site and understands how it works, a lot of the issues can be eliminated. The filters and location are the best features in the functionality of the application. Being able to share and save a boat once it is selected is also extremely helpful. There is also a tab to select the contact information of a seller to get the phone number, email, and address of the seller. There is also a mobile application that is associated with this site which is great to use when looking at a mobile device. The site has wonderful functions and I highly recommend this application to anyone that is interested in buying or selling a boat.
Recommendations for Improvements:
- The first recommendation I would give the developer of the application is being able to compare selected boats in a cart. For instance, I would like to be able to select three different boats into a cart and then compare specific features of those boats. The specs I would like to compare are the hours on the motor, the length of the boats, the accessories on the boat, and the price. If the user could do this, it would help narrow down the search even more.
- Like the first recommendation, it would be nice to be able to filter all boats within the hours of the motor. When searching for a boat to buy, most people would decide not to buy a boat if it had over 500 hours of service on the motor because that is like a vehicle with a lot of miles.
- The third recommendation would be able to eliminate ads and "request a price" in the search. As the user is looking through all the options after the filters, there is still a ton of trash like ads and featured boats that say request a price.
